Outreach at Sodus United Third Methodist Church

Deuteronomy 15:10, 11 - 10 “So be sure to give to the poor. Don’t hesitate to give to them, because the Lord your God will bless you for doing this good thing. He will bless you in all your work and in everything you do. 11 There will always be poor people in the land. That is why I command you to be ready to help your brother or sister. Give to the poor in your land who need help.

The Sodus Farmers’ Market is in its 9th year and continues to grow.  In 2009 the market featured a handful of vendors.  In 2017 the average number of vendors is up to 20.  Consumers can find fresh, locally grown fruit and vegetables and enjoy conversing with our local farmers.  Cornell Cooperative Extension provides nutritional education materials, activities and samplings which correspond with the produce in season.  In addition, visitors to the market can choose from honey products, plants, cheeses, fresh baked goods, craft offerings, treasures at the church “Second Best” shop, freshly brewed coffee, frappes and smoothies, and delicious meals at the market’s two prepared food vendors – Pop’s House and El Rincon.  Weekly Special Events add an entertainment component, with activities for children during the summer weeks.  The market not only provides local products to buy, but social interaction as well.

Since 2008 the Sodus United Third Methodist Church has been sponsoring Samuel Dorrelus, a student in Haiti whose dream has been to become an agronomist to help poor farmers in his native land.  Through Peter and Carol Loveland’s “Haiti Connection” mission of the Waterloo United Methodist Church, the Sodus church sponsored Samuel through his “High School” years, a year of internship at “Faith in Action International”, and 3 years at S.E.E.D. in Les Cayes, Haiti.  Samuel has completed his agronomy courses at S.E.E.D. and has been recruited to work with local farmers in Verrettes, Haiti through Faith in Action International.

In February 2016 the Outreach Team took on a project to bring socialization and joy to local women.  The team put on a themed luncheon near Valentine’s Day, and invited local single women to enjoy a delicious meal and a short, uplifting program.  The luncheon was duly appreciated by attendees and therefore the Outreach Team has committed to continue this as an annual event.

Over the years Judy Bezon Braune, Sandy Hall and Roy McCarthy, who are trained as United Methodist Volunteer in Mission (UMVIM) Team Leaders, have led many mission trips to help those in crisis.  Three trips to work in the Katrina Recovery from 2006 – 2008; four trips to the Southern Tier to help in recovery efforts after flooding there; and one trip to the Utica area after flooding.  Three trips were made to New Windsor, Maryland to help at the SERRV International warehouse and flood buckets were put together and delivered to the Church World Service (CWS) warehouse while there.  As well, youth from SUTMC spent a weekend volunteering at Mission Central in Mechanicsburg, Pa.  As a local mission groups from SUTMC have volunteered at the Foodlink warehouse in Rochester, NY.  As needs arise and schedules allow, we will plan future trips.

The Outreach Team welcomes all who have a heart for missions.  Please contact Sandy Hall – shall3@rochester.rr.com if interested.
